Create successful teams, any environment

Secrets of Successful Teams by Chris Widener

Leigh Alden demonstrating how to nutritionally and naturally container garden your food

To be a success is not always to be a success individually. In fact, most of the time, we achieve our successes as part of a team.

We are all part of teams. Our family is a team. Our place of work is a team. The community groups we belong to are teams. Sometimes we are the team leader or “coach,” while other times we fulfill the role of follower or “player.” It is so important, then, for us to understand teams and how they work, especially those who achieve success—the achievement of their desired goal.

In my life, I have been on some successful teams, and some not-so-successful teams. This includes both athletically as well as professionally. When I was growing up, I worked for seven years with the Seattle Supersonics, our local National Basketball Association team, which now plays in Oklahoma City as the Thunder. They were at times unsuccessful and, in 1979, my second year working there, the most successful team in the league, winning the World Championship. I have been able to see firsthand what makes the difference between the unsuccessful teams and the successful ones.

Here are some principles I know that, when implemented on a regular basis, can turn any lackluster team into an outstanding one! These principles can be applied to your family, your business, your organization and, yes, your sports team.

Communication/Leader
The leader needs to communicate the vision. If they are setting the pace, they need to let people know where they are going so that the team can follow. The coach always does a pre-game talk, laying out the vision.

The leader communicates the vision frequently, so as to always be updating the team as to where they are at and what changes need to be made. The coach doesn’t relegate the direction he gives to the pre-game; he coaches and communicates all the way through the game.

Team
Watch a good basketball team. They are talking to each other all of the time. Helping one another out, encouraging one another, praising one another, and telling each other how they can make changes so the same mistakes aren’t made again. The same is true of successful teams in the professional world, and in life in general.

Excellence
The truly great teams are teams that are committed to excellence. In everything they do, their goal is to achieve at the highest level. And this commitment is held throughout the team and at every level. A successful team cannot have members who are not committed to excellence, because in the end, they will become the weak link.

Followership
If you want a fascinating read, pick up The Power of Followership by Robert Kelley. The author basically makes the point that the secret to getting things done lies not only in great leadership, but in how well everyone else, 99 percent of the team, follows the leadership. Good teams are filled with people who are committed to following and getting the job done.

Understanding Roles
Pardon the Chicago Bulls analogy, but it is so clear. In the team’s championship years, when the game was on the line, with only one shot left, everyone—the coaches, the players, the 20,000 people watching in the stadium and millions watching on TV—knew who would shoot the last shot. That was Michael Jordan’s role.

Every team works best when the members of the team have clearly defined and understood roles. Some do one thing, others do another. One isn’t better or more important than the other, just different. When teams operate out of their strengths and their roles, they win.

Strengths and Weaknesses
This brings me to strengths and weaknesses. Every team member has strengths and weaknesses. The successful teams are those who on a regular and consistent basis enable the members to operate out of their strengths and not out of their weaknesses. And one person’s strength will cover another’s weakness. This is teamwork, enabling all of the bases to be covered.

Fun
The team that plays together stays together. Is your team all work and no play? If you’re smart, that will change. Get your team out of the office once a month and go have some fun. Enjoy one another. Enjoy life. It will bring a sense of bonding that can’t be made even in “winning.”

Common Goals and Vision
I have found that these need to have three aspects: short, simple and clear. Can you say it in less than 30 seconds? Is it simple? Can you and others understand it? Does the team all know what they are working together for?

Appreciation
All through the “game,” successful teams appreciate one another and show it in a variety of ways. The coach shows it to the players, the players show it to the coach, and the players show it to one another.

Here is a “Successful Teams” checklist you can use for evaluation:

  • Is there communication between coach and players and from player to player?
  • Is your team committed to excellence?
  • Do those on the team know what it means to follow?
  • Does everyone on my team know their specific role?
  • Do the individuals on our team regularly operate out of their strengths as opposed to their weaknesses?
  • Does our team take a break from time to time to just have fun together?
  • Do we understand our common goals and vision? Can we all state it (them)?
  • Is there a sense of and communication of genuine appreciation among my team?

Having A Hard Time Being A Homeworker?

Gordon Wu To The Rescue … by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 01.28.10

30 second commute

Working from home is green; time and carbon is saved by the commute, it utilizes space better, and saves companies and workers a lot of money. But It is hard being a homeworker sometimes; I miss the camaraderie of the gang at the office. The transition from home to work that is served by the commute. The closet of office supplies and most of all, the lunches with friends. But there is help on the way; Shedworking tells us about how Gordon Wu City Local worked with Abberant Architecture to develop a new business franchise system in Shenzhen that addresses these problems with a series of products and services designed to make working at home more comfortable, social and office-like. Like the Eleva-door:

For customers craving the morning wake-up routine that only an elevator can create, why not add a ‘lift’ to your everyday with Eleva-door. Fit Eleva-door to any standard door-frame in the home and create an elevator style gateway to your office past complete with elevator music, an LED lighting system and up to sixty floors waiting time. Now you can rocket to your new office on the 41st floor without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Green Home Business

And I so miss the ride on my bike to work, the exercise, the interaction with cars and pedestrians. But Gordon Wu integrates my bike into my desk, so I can ” cycle to the office from the comfort of your own home. Power your computer by pedalling under a purpose built desk designed for greater leg-room and improved stature.”

And the office supplies. Gordon Wu has thought of everything, but also realizes that we don’t have as much space in our home offices, so everything serves multiple purposes. Like the stapler phone (I hope it comes in red) and the iPunch hole punch.

and for Home Business attire

Now that we are getting into group video conferencing I could use the T-shirt, and I love the idea of the random email generator, that would save me so much time.

But best of all is the Lunchbook, bringing people together around healthy food. Homeworkers need never be lonely again, as this moveable feast comes to the residentail neighbourhoods where we toil alone and brings us together.

The growing trend towards healthier eating and an increase in isolation through home working has greatly increased the demand for a local, social dining location in the midst of our city’s condominium enclaves. Lunchbook, Shenzhen’s first independent specialist mobile lunch diner, meets this demand by taking a superb selection of healthier local foods directly to the modern workplace, our city’s apartments.

While we are working it is a dog’s life for our pets, as they lie around waiting for us to get off the computer. Jaymi and other homeworkers with dogs will love Gordon Wu’s Wuuf Villages, developments with Paws Palaces and a Puppy Love Park, shown above.

Be sure to get out of the Home Office every day

This entire world of Gordon Wu City Local was imagined by David Chambers & Kevin Haley of Abberant Architecture, which “examines the way people live and interact with one another, researching their hidden desires and unforeseen dilemmas.” It was created for the Shenzhen & Hong Kong bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture.

Turning FEAR into F.E.A.R.

Helix Nebula

… by Jason Rosen, Owner of Rosen Professional Services

We often work with clients who have a great work ethic and a fantastic business idea but somehow seem to encounter obstacles that keep them from achieving the growth and success that they sincerely seek. The good news is that some of these common challenges are fairly easy to overcome with a little effort.

Without a doubt, the thing that holds most of us back is fear. That’s right; fear. If we are honest we have all felt that twinge of fear. For some of us, we are afraid of failure. For others, there is the fear of financial ruin. For others it may be situational like approaching a prospect or giving a presentation in front of a group. Sometimes those fears are justified; other times we simply create things to be afraid of. In either case successful business owners learn to take action in the presence of our fear. As solo-preneurs we can’t allow our fears to keep us paralyzed. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do something productive with this most natural of life experiences?

The great news is that we all have the power to convert fear into F.E.A.R.

Focus
Energy
Action
Results

So first let’s address some of the ways we can put our fears aside and gain some Focus. First you need to acknowledge the fear you have and take ownership of that fear. Try writing down what you want to accomplish and then follow that accomplishment with what your fear really is. An example might look like:

“I want ___________ but I scare myself by thinking _______________.”

This will help you place focus on the result you want and at the same time isolate the the fear that is holding you back.

The next thing I want you to ask yourself is: “What is the worst thing that can realistically happen?”

Then immediately follow that up with the following question: “What is the best thing that can happen?”

These two questions will help you to better understand the true risk. Often the risk is less scary than we imagined. More importantly the above exercise will help you place a FOCUS on your goals and PROPEL yourself into the future.

Next I want to talk about the magic that occurs when we are in the company of other successful people. Perhaps it is inspiration or maybe it is the ability to bounce ideas off of our peers but there is no denying that we receive a special kind of ENERGY from mixing up our routine and being in the company of others. Isolation zaps our energy and places us in a rut. In turn this energy is vitally critical to ensure we are in a position to take the actions necessary to accomplish our goals.

We have faced our fears, we have found the magic that gives energy – now I want you to take ACTION. All the planning in the world will not bring you the results you need if you fail to execute on those plans. Taking action means making decisions.

In order to take action, we need to be decisive and sincere about our Focus. There are a few reasons why we tend to not take action. Sometimes we feel as though we don’t have enough information. Other times, and this is more often the case; we suffer from information overload. We actually choke on too much information.

Regardless of the real issue, the reality is that we feel as though we don’t have true understanding. The information imbalance creates hesitancy. And hesitancy is the enemy of action. So we need overcome this issue by going back to our goal. What is it that we are focused on? Where do we direct our energy? What actions do we need to take?

Try to incorporate at least three actions each week to stay focused and ultimately move closer to your goals.

Lastly we measure our RESULTS. Did we accomplish what we wanted? If you did hit your target (and I know you will), then you will move on to the next thing. Remember, success breeds success! If the results came up short don’t despair. Treat it as an experiment and tweak the actions accordingly. Stick with it and eventually you achieve the results you desire.

To this end, I recommend taking at least three action steps each and every week that move you closer to your goals.

Whatever your wishes, there is no reason to let fear rob you of what you deserve. By turning fear into Focus, Energy, Action and Results you will find that all of your hopes for the New Year and beyond are well within your reach.

The Health Risks of Naked Body Scanners

January 25, 2010 by Bob Livingston

The Health Risks of Naked Body Scanners

The naked body scanners that government and submissive, fearful travelers are clamoring for in the wake of the Christmas day Northwest Airlines bombing attempt will expose people to harmful radiation creating an as-yet-unrealized health risk.

And while the machines do a virtual strip search revealing much more than just knives and guns someone might have hidden away, the technology probably wouldn’t have revealed the bomb ingredients carried by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Even so, The New York Times reports that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has contracted for 900 of the scanners to be deployed in airports across the country.

The current technology uses one of two methods: the older backscatter X-ray method or the newer millimeter wave method.

With the backscatter X-ray technology, passengers stand against a large backscatter machine as a pencil-thin X-ray beam rapidly scans them, producing a negative image of the entire body. The X-ray barely penetrates the skin. So while any weapons that are hidden beneath clothing are revealed, weapons or explosives concealed in body cavities or beneath heavy folds of skin are not.

The Health Freedom Alliance (HFA) says backscatter X-ray machines are setting the stage for a future epidemic of cancer.

While the manufacturers claim it would take about 150 scans to equal the amount of radiation exposure of one chest X-ray, frequent flyers exposed to the scans, plus extra radiation exposure at high altitudes could be a deadly combination for them. The operators of the machines and those who spend a lot of time around them face the danger from exposure as well.

“Drawing on sources like The Mayo Clinic and The Radiological Society of North America as well as interviews with prominent radiologists, molecular biologists, and medical doctors, ionizing (penetrating) radiation in any dose, no matter how tiny, causes genetic mutations, which set all living cells exposed on the path to cancer. X-rays are considered ionizing radiation,” according to the HFA.

Researchers at England’s Oxford University say that X-rays given off by medical equipment are to blame for thousands of cancers every year. So combine the scans you get for medical treatment with those you will receive while traveling and you can see how the danger increases.

The millimeter wave technology machines may be as bad or worse. Researchers for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Technology Review blog write that the terahertz (THz) waves emitted by the millimeter wave machines interact with DNA in ways that are only now being understood.

According to the blog:

But what of the health effects of terahertz waves? At first glance, it’s easy to dismiss any notion that they can be damaging. Terahertz photons are not energetic enough to break chemical bonds or ionise [sic] atoms or molecules, the chief reasons why higher energy photons such as X-rays and (ultraviolet) UV rays are so bad for us. But could there be another mechanism at work?

The evidence that terahertz radiation damages biological systems is mixed. “Some studies reported significant genetic damage while others, although similar, showed none,” say Boian Alexandrov at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and a few buddies. Now these guys think they know why.

Alexandrov and co [sic] have created a model to investigate how THz fields interact with double-stranded DNA and what they’ve found is remarkable. They say that although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication. That’s a jaw dropping conclusion.

The blog goes on to say, “Of course, terahertz waves are a natural part of [sic] environment, just like visible and infrared light. But a new generation of cameras are [sic] set to appear that not only record terahertz waves but also bombard us with them. And if our exposure is set to increase, the question that urgently needs answering is what level of terahertz exposure is safe.”

And if the dangers to our health aren’t enough to give you pause, consider how the images produced could be used. While the TSA and the machines’ promoters are saying the images produced are too vague to be considered indecent, a German security advisor recently explained to the German publication Bild.com just how revealing they can be.

“Unlike with a complete X-ray examination, the rays do not go deeply under the skin. They see only the things which lie over it, so bladed weapons and firearms as well as ceramics,” Hans-Detlef Dau is quoted as saying.

“Beyond that, they show intimate piercings, catheters and the form of breasts and penises.

“But newer devices can automatically distort intimate areas in the picture.”

And a reporter for The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom, viewing a trial of the new scanners that have been placed in the Manchester Airport, wrote, “The full-body scanner on trial at Manchester airport consists of two Tardis-like blue boxes that passengers stand between and produces a ghostly naked image with curves and genitals eerily visible.”

The scanners produce an image that looks like a negative. And, as demonstrated here (caution: this image may not be suitable for viewing in a work environment or on a monitored computer) by using Photoshop computer software anyone can invert the image to create a photo of a naked body in full color.

The TSA says the images are not stored and there is no way for them to be transferred or transmitted. But the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) disagrees and claims that the TSA specified in 2008 documents that the machines must have image storage and sending abilities.

According to an EPIC press release:

These machines produced detailed, three-dimensional images of individuals’ naked bodies and are being used at airport security checkpoints, court houses, and correctional facilities.

While TSA originally provided assurances that the technology would not be mandatory for passengers and would include a privacy algorithm that blurred faces, the agency later withdrew these assurances. In April 2009, the agency announced plans to expand the mandatory use of body imaging to all U.S. Airports. This means that Whole Body Imaging devices will replace metal detectors at the primary screening devices in U.S. airports. As a consequence, the TSA could obtain naked pictures of every airline passenger, including children, who travel from a U.S. airport.

That leaves open the possibility the machines—which can see beneath people’s clothing—can be abused by TSA insiders and hacked by outsiders, EPIC Executive Director Marc Rotenberg told CNN.

And how believable is it that the TSA is not going to store images? Wouldn’t they want to have a record available if a terrorist did slip through security?

Without a record of some sort there is no way to understand how the terrorist outwitted the system. And without that knowledge how can those invading our privacy while ostensibly trying to make us more secure ensure that that method—at least—is not used against us again?

The fact remains that until the government is ready to make us more secure by profiling and targeting those who seek to harm us, these steps are just window dressing. Unfortunately it’s the type of window dressing that is designed to make us more compliant and submissive while empowering government and enriching a few well-connected corporations and lobbyists.

Change Begins with Choice

by our dearly departed Jim Rohn

Monarch pre Butterfly by LyndaW1

Monarch pre Butterfly by LyndaW1

Any day we wish, we can discipline ourselves to change it all. Any day we wish, we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge. Any day we wish, we can start a new activity. Any day we wish, we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are. We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusion over truth, and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make. But while we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause. As Shakespeare uniquely observed, “The fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves.” We created our circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today. Those who are in search of the good life do not need more answers or more time to think things over to reach better conclusions. They need the truth. They need the whole truth. And they need nothing but the truth.

We cannot allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day, to lead us down the wrong path. We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in how our life works out. And then we must make the very choices that will bring life, happiness and joy into our daily lives.

And if I may be so bold to offer my last piece of advice for someone seeking and needing to make changes in their life: If you don’t like how things are, change it!

You’re not a tree. You have the ability to totally transform every area in your life.

And it all begins with your very own power of choice.

Legends: Denis Waitley is Planting Seeds of Greatness

Planting more seeds than you realize

How he pursued his passion and helps others do the same.

Karyn  Reagan  January 3, 2010

Grandma said he “mowed a fine lawn.” Those are the clearest words of affirmation Denis Waitley recalls hearing as a young child. It’s no wonder then, that every Saturday, Waitley would hop on his bike and ride 20 miles each way to her house.

Life at home was volatile, at best. The country was mired in the stresses of World War II, finances were nonexistent, dad was an alcoholic and mom was angry. Peace was a stranger to the Waitley household. A particularly damaging eruption happened one night when Waitley was 9. He went to bed in the room he shared with his 2-year-old brother. “My father walked in, and instead of telling us goodnight, he said goodbye. It was six years before we saw him again,” Waitley tells SUCCESS.

Today, far from a youth spent in turmoil beyond his control, Waitley has created a life based on the belief that the power of the mind can overcome almost any obstacle. He is an internationally known speaker and consultant whose clients have included astronauts, Olympic athletes, Fortune 500 executives and Super Bowl champions. He has spoken to youth groups, soldiers, entrepreneurs and world leaders. His words of wisdom have been recorded in best-selling books and audio programs, such as The Psychology of Winning, Seeds of Greatness and Empires of the Mind, which have been translated and distributed around the world.

Learning the Power of a Tiny Seed

But in 1942, Waitley felt anything but influential. Still a boy, he was suddenly the man of the house. He turned to his Superman books for guidance, feeling like he must deal with his feelings like Superman would. He had to be strong. His mother was struggling with her own outlook, and what she saw translated negatively to her three children. There was no child support, and the Waitley children often felt like their existence was an inconvenience to their mother.

To replenish his strength, Waitley visited his grandmother. She taught him to look beyond his circumstances and become the person he was meant to be. Waitley tells of one particularly poignant memory: “We planted a garden together. I was amazed that the tiny seeds we were burying in the ground would become something we would later harvest and eat.” In response to his wonder, grandma told Waitley that they were planting seeds of greatness. Years later, her answer became the title of his New York Times Best-Seller, Seeds of Greatness.

Grandma also introduced Waitley to the world of books. She was a proofreader, and she and her husband owned a bookstore. Waitley acquired his first library card because of her influence.

Then his eighth-grade teacher gave him an influential gift: As a Man Thinketh, by James Allen. The impact on Waitley was twofold. He felt affirmed by the positive words of another person, and the author of the book portrayed individuals as gardeners, planting seeds that would affect the future. Just like grandma.

By this time, Waitley knew he wanted to be a writer and public speaker. “I wanted to be just like Rod Serling, writer of The Twilight Zone,” Waitley says. He had discovered he had a gift for storytelling, and also loved the written word. But, like most young men in the early 1950s, the Korean War was what determined his future.

After high school, Waitley entered the Naval Academy. He excelled and became a nuclear weapons pilot and electrical engineer. “I loved the thrill of being a pilot,” he says, “but did not enjoy being required to understand all of the intricate workings of the plane.”

Despite the details, Waitley says he learned some valuable lessons during those times. “I came to understand target seeking and reaching goals that I could not see in advance due to the darkness in front of me,” he says. Such lessons became an integral part of the guidance Waitley would one day share with millions of individuals as an expert in personal development.

After leaving the Navy, Waitley took a position as a financial public relations representative for an electronics company. Although far from his dream of becoming a writer and public speaker, it provided a paycheck.

As a few fragile seeds of success were starting to sprout in Waitley’s life, an opportunity presented itself in a way that could not be planned. It happened as Waitley was taking a break one day, gazing at the ocean from the property of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in Waitley’s hometown of La Jolla, Calif. There were chalkboards built into the walls of the buildings so the scientists could work amid the natural beauty. “I approached a white-jacketed scientist busy working on formulas and asked him what he was doing,” Waitley says. “He engaged in conversation with me and asked me what I did for a living.” Before the discourse ended, the scientist, Dr. Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine, offered Waitley the job of being the fundraiser for the Salk Institute. “Dr. Salk was an introvert and despised the task of talking to groups of people to raise funds for the Institute,” Waitley says. “He saw that I loved to speak and felt I was a great fit.” The only concern Salk had was Waitley’s lack of scientific understanding. He encouraged Waitley to acquire a postgraduate degree in psychology. So he did.

Salk was not able to offer Waitley an increase in salary, but he compensated him in a way that would pay huge dividends: introducing Waitley to his peers. “Because he was such a wellknown scientist, he was able to introduce me to people I never would have met,” Waitley says.

“One might work at something simply to receive a paycheck, but any free time should be used in pursuit of one’s ultimate goal.”

Exercising His Passion

“During this time, I learned that if you are not doing what your passion is, you are putting it on layaway,” Waitley says. “One might work at something simply to receive a paycheck, but any free time should be used in pursuit of one’s ultimate goal.” So, in addition to representing Salk, Waitley gave at least 500 speeches for which he was not compensated. “I recorded every speech in order to analyze what worked and what did not,” he says.

It was after a pro bono speech for World Book-Childcraft in 1975 that one of the seeds of greatness that Waitley had nurtured throughout his life bore fruit. The vice president of World Book- Childcraft sent the recording of that particular speech to his friend, Earl Nightingale. Nightingale was the first person to sell a recorded speech and is called the father of modern-day motivational speaking. His 45 LP record was titled The Strangest Secret. “I listened to it over and over again,” Waitley says.

“I was in my mid-30s, and starting to think that I had missed the boat that my dreams sailed on,” Waitley says. “Sure, I was partway there and had seen some success, but doubt tried to tell me that maybe it was time to accept that I wouldn’t make it all the way.” Those doubts were trampled when Waitley received a call from Nightingale, saying, “You have a nice voice, you have good stuff, and if you are ever in Chicago, you should make a point to see my partner, Lloyd Conant.” Waitley made it to Chicago.

Lloyd Conant and Earl Nightingale founded Nightingale-Conant Inc., which would be the most prominent audio firm in the United States for the next 25 years. In the mid-1970s, there were only two people who developed and marketed recorded speeches promoting personal development— Earl Nightingale was the first and Paul J. Meyer was second. Denis Waitley became the third.

Night ingale-Conant recorded and marketed Waitley’s speech The Psychology of Winning. It became the No. 1 best-selling program in personal growth of all time. “When asked what I’m known for, my answer is, ‘I’m known as the author and narrator of The Psychology of Winning,’ ” Waitley says. He explains that his message happened to hit America at a time (1978) when the country needed a winner. “It had just been announced that we would not participate in the Olympic Games being held in the Soviet Union. The East Germans had won most of the gold medals at the Montreal games, and things were generally not going well for our country.”

As often happens, one opportunity opened the door to another. He was appointed by the then-president of the Olympics Committee, William Simon, as the first-ever chairman of psychology on the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Council. Working with a team of experts in each sport, Waitley developed a mental training program for elite athletes.

One of the keys to this program was using affirming phrases and trigger words, such as power, explode and speed.

These words replaced negative phrases like “Don’t fall.” Waitley worked with such athletes as Mary Lou Retton and Carl Lewis.

The New York Times soon published Waitley’s recorded speech as a book, which became a bestseller, and he has published something every two years since then, for a total of 17 books and 10 audio recordings. He has shared the stage with such greats as Zig Ziglar, Norman Vincent Peale, Paul Harvey, Robert Schuller and Art Linkletter, to name a few. Waitley was also friends with W. Clement Stone, the early publisher of SUCCESS magazine, and was featured on the cover in 1979.

Sharing What He’s Learned

When asked what he would say to someone trying break free from generations of failure, Waitley recommends studying the biographies of successful people. “Remember, most successful people don’t enjoy that success until later in life,” he says. “It’s also important to determine your gifts, focus on them and be you. Chase your passion and not your pension, and, of course, make certain that you hang around optimists.”

The seeds planted in Waitley’s life when he was young had the potential to either rot in the ground or grow into plants bearing much fruit. Fortunately, Denis Waitley was determined to grow the seeds of his potential.

Are You Over Qualifying And Losing Massive Potential Opportunities?

use your potential

Our weekly Oliver’s Twist by Michael Oliver.  Master of words and relational thought.

_______

How many potential partners are you unknowingly losing by being too rigid or too demanding in your qualifying requirements?

You might want to heed this story from a very successful person I know. Consistently one of the top earners in his company, he is a past coaching student of mine!

Here is what he said…

“If I had been told when I was called by my upline that he was, quote – ‘looking for people who want to earn a yearly six figure income…’ – I would never have started.”

I asked him why.

What he told me could profoundly affect what you’re saying to your potential partners and the success of your business…

“At the time I was earning about $60,000 a year as an engineer. All I wanted to do was get out of it. I hated it. My thinking was that if I could get the same income by working for myself, that’s all I wanted.

Making a six-figure income would have been beyond my belief or even my needs and desire at that time… And if the person who called me said that it was a requirement, I would have disqualified myself and may have joined someone else.”

And what a loss that would have been both for himself and his upline if that $100K qualifying “restriction” had been presented to him… because he achieved his annual goal in just a few short months!

He then realized the sky was the limit and he could make as much as he wanted! And he does!

He literally “grew” into the idea that anything was attainable.

Ask yourself, how many “growing” opportunities could you be losing to other independent business owners because they are open to infinite possibilities by not creating self-imposed rigid hurdles?

In this particular case, what do you feel is more important? That your potential partner has to want to earn in excess of $100K each year, or must have a burning desire to change their present circumstances?

To me the answer is self-evident. It’s the desire to change.

However, the choice as always is yours! If you choose the $100K, then be aware it can have the opposite effect of what you’re intending. You will shut out countless potential possibilities as in my students’ case.

You can read more about the effective use of qualifying and Qualifying Questions in Chapter 12 of my book “How To Sell Network Marketing Without Fear, Anxiety Or Losing Your Friends!

So take a look at what you’re saying or asking and perhaps Re-Think it. Make sure you’re not losing people based on qualifiers that while sounding good to you, can cause you a massive loss of potential opportunities.

Attitude Makes a Difference by Tom Hopkins

Have you checked your Attitude today?

Studies have proven that attitude is one of the traits that separate average salespeople from their highly-successful colleagues.

I have to believe that it’s true in life in general, not just sales. Think about the happiest, most successful people you know. How do you usually find them? Are they depressed, negative or even apathetic? I doubt it. They’re probably upbeat, smiling and positive about life.

Why not take the same positive interested attitude you have toward your hobbies and transfer your passion to you ability to sell yourself, your ideas, or the end results of your hobby?

Instead of turning your selling job into a hobby, why not take the hobby you love so much and figure out how to market it or yourself? I’m not saying this change will make you a millionaire, but money isn’t the only measure of success. If you could support yourself comfortably on the earnings from your hobby, I would deem you as having a successful life.

Think about it! You already have the built-in enthusiasm, excitement and knowledge of your hobby. Now all you need to do is show others why they need to feel the same way. If you do a little research, you’ll find that many successful businesspeople started out by selling their hobbies. Determine what you love to do, and then figure out a way to get paid for it. What could be better?

Important caution to my Melaleuca customers

EcoSense <– PDF file

Caution! <– (Click for my video message).

You are using too much product, unless you are sharing, that is.  Seriously.  Adjust how much you use because there is no good reason to waste it.  I see the orders coming through and have to question you on this.

There are many reasons you chose these non-toxic products over the traditional family favorites from the store; I get that.

Maybe because they are safer, you are expecting or already have children, have allergies, migraines, successfully disinfect H1N1 virus or just wish to be smart by spending less for higher quality.  Whatever your reasons; I honor them.  However, please remain conservative when using them.

LESS IS MORE … you can always add more if you need to, you can also avoid using too much and have it last longer.  That is simple conservation.

Remember these products are very concentrated.  You have to recalculate volume, start with 1/4 of the amount of store bought you used. Example, body wash, hand soap, sanitizer, dish soap, tea tree oil, shampoo, etc. (whenever you are using full strength without diluting).

Grateful for each and every one of you creating a safer environment within and outside.

We always have choices; you chose some of the 350+ products and we’d love to have you share WHY you still use Melaleuca products.

Are you a retail or wholesale customer?  If wholesale, are you earning  in proportion to the time you spend talking about it?

Your answers help others make decisions; thank you for sharing openly and honestly… CSea Perkins

BTW:  If you are not my customer and you love Melaleuca products, we encourage your comments as well.  Especially the ‘undocumented’ benefits you know about.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

“All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.

Action vs. Self-Delusion by Jim Rohn

Knowledge fueled by emotion equals action. Action is the ingredient that ensures results. Only action can cause reaction. Further, only positive action can cause positive reaction.

Action. The whole world loves to watch those who make things happen, and it rewards them for causing waves of productive enterprise.

I stress this because today I see many people who are really sold on affirmations. And yet there is a famous saying that “faith without action serves no useful purpose.” How true!

I have nothing against affirmations as a tool to create action. Repeated to reinforce a disciplined plan, affirmations can help create wonderful results.

But there is also a very thin line between faith and folly. You see, affirmations without action can be the beginnings of self-delusion. And for your well-being, there is little worse than self-delusion.

The man who dreams of wealth, and yet walks daily toward certain financial disaster, and the woman who wishes for happiness, and yet thinks thoughts and commits acts that lead her toward certain despair, are both victims of the false hope that affirmations without action can manufacture. Why? Because words soothe and, like a narcotic, they lull us into a state of complacency. Remember this: To make progress, you must actually get started!

The key is to take a step today. Whatever the project, start today. Start clearing out a drawer of your newly organized desk—today. Start setting your first goal—today. Start listening to motivational programs—today. Start a sensible weight-reduction plan—today. Start calling on one tough customer a day—today. Start putting money in your new “investment for fortune” account—today. Write a long-overdue letter—today. Anyone can! Even an uninspired person can start reading inspiring books.

Get some momentum going on your new commitment for the good life. See how many activities you can pile on your new commitment to the better life. Go all out! Break away from the downward pull of gravity. Start your thrusters going. Prove to yourself that the waiting is over and the hoping is past, that faith and action have now taken charge.

It’s a new day, a new beginning for your new life. With discipline, you will be amazed at how much progress you’ll be able to make. What have you got to lose except the guilt and fear of the past?

Now, I offer you this challenge: See how many things you can start and continue in this, the first day of your new beginning.
